So you went to RISD for undergrad, and that was pretty traditional graphic design?

Yes, very tangible things.

When did the definition of design and graphic design start to expand for you?

I mean, part of happens just though time. I think from the time I was there until now, we’ve acknowledged design as many things.

We look at society in general, and our sense of identity has also done the same thing. Like my identity is not just one thing it’s multiple things, and that’s something that’s happening in society and it’s also happening to the professions that we’re in and I would say that design is one those things.

Would you say that the blurring of the word design, would you say that’s part of a larger social trend?

I’d say … yes. It’s part of that, but it’s also part of a larger global communication network. I think that is a part of technology and I part of mass communications and that has of course influenced how design looks and what it is.

Also because of that technology people can speak up and say “No, this is design.” So now there are these little factions of motion design, service design, all other type of design, and so every little design neighborhood is speaking up for design.

I’m in this program where we love to throw definitions of design out the window. And it can be hard to find yourself in that when it’s so ... undefined.

I think that’s looking at the output. In my opinion what’s best for students to do is to look inward and really looking at what you want to do, and then letting the output be whatever is natural.

News flash, it’s gonna keep changing.

I worry about how the industry changes so much.

Do you have any hope into what it changes into?

As design has become sort of more populous, it has become more of a …. I guess a PR tool for lack of a better word. If you look back at the days of Emigre, those were designers that wanted to say something.

Even though Rudy (Vanderlans) had typefaces to sell, he wasn’t seeing Emigre as a big money-maker. They had something to say and had friends who had things to say so they just did this magazine.

Whereas now I think alot of the things that are in the press about design in general, are honestly mostly PR things. There about generating clicks and it’s not the same amount of depth that we used to have.

It’s going to hard to get back to that kind of depth (that we had with Emigre) because design is so splintered and we’re talking about so many different things, which is why we’re having this conversation. You’re going to find yourselves into little design enclaves and that is where the really meaty design conversation will be - and I wish that could happen in a more sort of public space.
